April 16, 2009 — Castle Pines North citizens may have noticed a change on their 2008-09 property tax statement. This is not a tax increase.
Before Castle Pines North became a city, property owners paid .45 mills (one mill is equivalent to one-tenth of a cent) directly to Douglas County for law enforcement services. Since Castle Pines North has incorporated, property owners will continue to pay the same .45 mills for law enforcement services. Only now the funds are being allocated to the city, which then directs law enforcement funds to Douglas County per an
intergovernmental agreement between the city and the Douglas County Sheriff.
Although taxpayers will see the change reflected as a separate line item on the current property tax statements, it is not an increase. The tax statement simply has been reformulated to reflect the city's incorporation.
