Castle Pines North voters OK name change,
reject medical marijuana facilities

Nov. 3, 2010

To all Castle Pines North residents:

The City will be known as the City of Castle Pines, and there will be no medical marijuana facilities opening in the City limits as a result of Tuesday’s election.

Voters approved the ballot question to drop “North” from the City’s name, a move City officials believe will be helpful in branding Castle Pines as a premier community in the Denver metropolitan area and enhancing its image as a great place to live, visit or base a business.

Medical marijuana facilities will not be among those businesses, however. Like many municipalities and counties throughout the state, Castle Pines North put the decision about whether to permit such businesses to operate within its limits in the hands of its citizens, and the response from voters was “no.” City leaders believe the decision reflects the community’s values overall and will prevent any of the undesirable impacts of such facilities experienced in other locations from affecting Castle Pines North. At the same time, any residents who hold a valid medical marijuana permit will not be denied access to their medication.

Voters did approve adoption of the ordinance that abolishes the Castle Pines Urban Renewal Authority. Backers of the measure objected to what they perceived as a lack of input into the process prior to its passage.

Finally, in a non-binding question regarding the possible dissolution of the Castle Pines North Metropolitan District the majority of voters made it known they would prefer to have the City provide water and wastewater services rather than an outside entity. Ballot choices included the City of Castle Pines North, the Parker Water Sanitation District, the Town of Castle Rock the Centennial Water Sanitation District and no preference.
