Wildfire Mitigation Community Meeting
The CPN City Council hosted a community meeting on wildfire mitigation, preparedness and evacuation procedures earlier this week, presented by Einar Jensen, Life Safety Educator with South Metro Fire Rescue Authority.
Mitigation plans and procedures were discussed, which help reduce the spread of fire by reducing wild land fuels (shrubs, trees) and urban fuels (fences, decks, outdoor furniture). Mitigation efforts include reducing the amount of vegetation, separation of trees and planting more fire resistant shrubbery, principles which can be applied to common space areas within communities. Through the collaborative efforts of the City and SMFR Authority, a grant application has been filed to acquire funding for wildfire mitigation within our community. Councilmember Kim Hoffman is coordinating this effort, which began last year with the City's adoption of its Community Wildfire Protection Plan.
South Metro Fire Rescue Authority Open House
South Metro Fire Rescue Authority invites trick or treaters of all ages to an open house on October 31, 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., at Castle Pines Fire Station #36, 421 Castle Pines Parkway. With October being Fire Prevention Month, the open house will provide safety tips, as well as treats for trick or treaters.
Trick or Treat Safety Tips
With Halloween later this month, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has a number of safety tips to keep the holiday safe:
Costumes
- Use make-up instead of a mask. If a mask must be worn, wear one that fits and is breathable
- Wear a bright/light costume that fits well and is flame retardant
- Carry a flashlight and Glo stick. Heavy flashlights make good defense weapons
Trick or Treating
- Walk with adults. Older kids walk in groups with mapped paths in lit areas
- Trick or treat between the hours of 6:00 p.m. –
8:00 p.m.
- Establish a return home time and wear a watch
- Walk in well lit areas and only in a neighborhood that you know
- Do not accept “homemade” treats and drinks, except from friends and relatives. Parents should approve of the offering before accepting it. Children should not go inside anyone’s home
- Adults should smell and inspect ALL treats before consuming
- If help is needed, scream “HELP” or “FIRE” as loud as possible
- If someone wants to steal your candy, throw it at them and run. It is not worth being a victim of a violent act
Decorations
- Use Glo sticks inside of pumpkins, rather than candles. Not only are they safer than candles, but they will not wilt the pumpkin and last longer
- Keep pets inside on Halloween
- While pets may look cute dressed up in costumes, it is not a good idea to take them trick or treating. Chocolate is not good for dogs nor cats and the holiday hustle can fray an animal’s nerves
- Extinguish all candles before leaving home to trick or treat
- If you are planning on not being home for treaters, leave porch light out. Do not leave a bowl of candy and assume that everyone will use the honor system.
The DCSO wants residents to be safe and secure. Please contact the DCSO Community Resource Section at 303.660.7544 with any concerns.
Castle Pines North Sign Regulations
As a reminder, signs are not permitted on City streets and rights-of-way. This includes temporary, portable signs such as service advertising, business advertising and political campaign signs. Political signs are permitted only on private property and may not exceed thirty-two square feet in size. Additionally, signs are subject to either:
- setback restrictions in Section 2904.04 of the City Zoning Ordinance or
- not to exceed six square feet in size without regard to setback requirements
All signs larger than six square feet are required to obtain a City issued sign permit.
To help keep Castle Pines North a clean and safe place to live, the City will remove all illegal signs located within the City’s streets and parkways. The right-of-way area generally includes the paved portion of the street, medians, intersections, utility poles and equipment, any attached or detached sidewalks and a maintenance area approximately ten feet from the edge of the sidewalk or pavement.
